Singularity came out in the summer of last year and flew under most people’s radar. The good news is that this means you can pick up an enjoyable game for cheap now. The game is heavily influenced by Bioshock and anyone who has played that game will notice that when playing. It’s not a bad thing though as developer Raven Software has taken the core concepts of that game and built a solid experience around it.
Player’s take the role of Renko who is charged with investigating the Russian island Katorga-12 in 2010. Katorga -12 turns out to be an island where the Russians conducted experiments with the mysterious E99 until a horrific accident in 1955. It turns out that E99 has the ability to manipulate time and mutate living organisms. As Renko, you will be traveling between 2010 and 1955 trying to fix the timestream while fighting mutated monsters and Russian soldiers. Fear not though, as you will be equipped with the TMD (Time Manipulation Device). This unique device allows you to manipulate time and do cool things like slow enemies down, age and de-age objects and mutate soldiers into monsters that will attack their teammates. Half the fun of this game comes from finding new and exciting ways to utilize this device in combat and to solve the simple puzzles around you.
The game also has a decent amount of weapons to choose from to complement your TMD, and you can upgrade them to increase their power, reload speed, and clip size. My favorite weapon was the sniper rifle that could slow down time, it made for some great head shots.
It is a short game and will only take a couple of hours to beat. The story is also so-so, with a few twist at the end and three different endings depending on the final choices you make in the game. It also features an online mode, but I haven’t had the chance to try it out yet. The game can be found on sale between $10-$20 and offers enough enjoyment for that price that I recommend picking it up. If you’re looking for a solid gaming experience and have played through all the big name games that have been released lately you can find it for PS3, Xbox 306 and PC.
