Parasite Eve was Square’s attempt at the survival horror genre. It was released on the original Playstation in 1998 and was a bit like Resident Evil mixed with RPG elements. It was well received by the public and became a cult classic. The game received a sequel a two years later then disappeared from the video game world. Now, Square Enix is reviving the franchise with 3rd Birthday for the PSP. It follows the series main heroine, Aya Brea, and takes place after the first two games.
The plot has Manhattan being attacked by hideous creatures called the “Twisted”. Aya is called in because of her special powers to fight this new invasion. In typical Square fashion, her memory has been lost and how and why that happened to her will figure into the plot of the game. Battles in the game is described by Square Enix as a “cinematic action RPG”. Aya will gain a new ability called “Overdrive”, that allows her to switch bodies with one of her teammates, allowing her to control them. Once you are in control of your teammates, you can order them to target specific enemies or have them defend themselves. It’s a very interesting mechanic and I can wait to see how it plays out in combat. The game will also incorporate 3rd person shooter elements, ala Resident Evil 5 , both in and out of combat.
This sounds like it has the making of a great game for the PSP, and those of us who own a PSP know how few and far those are. It lands in store March 29, 2011 with a special Twisted Edition that features a hardback book packed with art work and concept illustrations, 2 deluxe Aya Brea lithographs art prints, a voucher for 50% of Final Fantasy 2 on the Playstation network, and an exclusive Aya Brea costume for Lighting to wear in the upcoming Final Fanatsy Dissidia 2.
